| PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Members,
It seems like yesterday that kids were getting out of school for their widely anticipated summer break. Yet it's hard to believe that school is back in session and talk has turned to the upcoming Auburn and Alabama football season. I sincerely hope everyone has had a wonderful Summer and is looking forward to the Fall. I am really excited about the upcoming year serving as your president for the Birmingham District Dental Society and the continuing education that will be offered to you. Our first meeting will be September 13th at The Club with Dr. Ken Tilashalski speaking on infection control. This will help fulfill that elusive CE requirement that many of us are scrambling to acquire prior to renewing our licenses.
Many things have changed since I started attending our district meetings in 2007. Back then, we held our meetings every month at the Hoover Country Club and access to these was challenging to those outside the Hoover/Vestavia area. I have seen our district reach critical financial insecurity clouding its very future. I was able to witness the often unnoticed and thankless work of the district presidents and treasurers over the past 5-6 years right the ship and re-secure the firm financial footing this organization has historically experienced. I am humbled and honored to now serve as your president and continue the upward trajectory of our district's future.
Although there are multiple other opportunities to acquire your necessary CE hours throughout the year, I would like to encourage everyone to attend our district meetings. They provide quality information in a Birmingham landmark venue allowing for networking and socializing with your dental colleagues. If you never have, please consider inviting a new or prospective member to join you. Many area dentists do not attend simply because they are unaware of this opportunity available to them. Last year, I personally saw a number of young dentists attend our district meetings on a regular basis. In fact, many of these dentists are now serving on the district's executive council! At a time when all professional organizations are experiencing a drop in attendance and participation, it is exciting to see our own organization, and specifically our district, buck this trend and recruit new members. Thank you again for allowing me to serve as your president, and I look forward to seeing everyone at our first meeting!
